Chris Mitchell and I decided to do a cast and blast trip in the Mon National Forest for a little Turkey and Trout. Well the Turkey hunting didnt pan out as planned so we decided to look for some Trout. The rain had changed our plans a little bit and we found ourselves looking for some higher elevation streams. We found ourselfs along a back road that crosses several brookie streams that flow into the Greenbrier River. We accessed the stream via the National Forest property and despite the higher flows we soon started hooking up with some brookies. After a while we decided to check out a couple of other streams, but failed to land any fish although some were spotted. We did manage to check off a couple of streams off the "LIST".
I am simple man originally from the small hicktown of Hinton, WV. I grew up fishing the New River for Smallmouth Bass and anything else that jumped on the end of the hook, but have been exclusively fly fishing for trout 12 months a year for Trout. My passion is being knee deep on a clear, cold, steep mountain stream with my 6 foot bamboo fly rod pursuing Native Brook Trout. Expect to see my outdoor endeavors updated as often as they occur on this page.
In WV there are far more wild trout opprotunities than many people know about. Many of these trout streams are on public property and are not hard to access, and can be easily found given a little leg work and an open mind. In WV, there are over 500 Native Brook Trout streams, roughly 300 or so Wild Brown Trout streams, and even less Wild Rainbow Trout streams. Some of these streams are fingerling supported, however many depend on natural reproduction. I have only merely skimmed the surface of our vast resource having only fished only 40 of our Native Brook Trout streams, about 30 Wild Brown Trout streams and only 10 Wild Rainbow Streams. I encourage everyone to fish hard, fish often, practice catch and release, and if you have the chance, give something back to protect WV's finest natural resource.
